Snedeker Finishes Palmer Cup With 3-1 Mark; Team
Europe Wins Title 7/12/03
KIAWAH
ISLAND, S.C. - Vanderbilt's Brandt Snedeker won his foursome
match and his singles match Friday to finish with a 3-1
mark at the 2003 Palmer Cup, but it wasn't enough as Team
Europe defeated Team USA, 14-10.
The Europeans held a 7-5 lead after the first day, but
claimed six of the 12 matches Friday and halved two others
for the win. The win was the first by Team Europe on American
soil in the seven years of the Palmer Cup. The United States
leads the all-time series 4-2-1.
After winning five singles matches and halving two others
in the afternoon session Thursday, Team Europe come out
blazing, winning two alternate-shot foursomes matches and
halving another. Spanish teammates Alejandro Cañizares
and Gonzalo Fdez.-Castaño defeated Bill Haas and
Chris Nallen, 3 and 1, to claim the first match.
David Inglis and David Price picked up Europe's second
foursome victory when they downed Jason Hartwick and Ryan
Moore, 1-up. The United States' only victory of the morning
session came when Snedeker and Dustin Bray won 2 and 1 over
David Skinns and Oliver Wilson.
Europe continued its domination of the singles matches
when it claimed four matches and halved another. America
won the first match of the afternoon when Bray defeated
Wilson, 2 and 1. Europe would respond by winning the next
three with victories by Cañizares, Castaño
and David Skinns.
Team Europe clinched the Palmer Cup when Nilsson won his
match 3 and 2 against Ryan Moore. Nallen and Rubinson won
their matches for Team USA. Hartwick and Inglis halved their
matches.
This annual Ryder Cup-style competition was played at the
distinguished Cassique at The Kiawah Island Club. Next year's
matches will be held at Ballybunion Golf Club in County
Kerry, Ireland.
