Men's Golfers Travel to Georgia for SEC Championship
4/23/03
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt men's golf teams travels
to St. Simons Island, Ga., this weekend to compete in the
2003 SEC Men's Golf Championship. The 54-hole event will
be played Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the par-70, 6,550-yard
Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club.
The Commodores ended last season by finishing in a tie
for fourth place at the SEC Men's Golf Championship with
a 34-over-par score of 874. The fourth-place finish was
the best ever for Vanderbilt, eclipsing the previous best
by five places.
Making the trip for the Commodores will be three of the
five that competed in last year's SEC Championship. Senior
Brandt Snedeker, junior Ken Lewis and sophomore Mark Donnell
make up the trio from last year, while senior Craig Dunlap
and sophomore Lance Goodson are making their first trips
to the SEC Championship. This will be the third consecutive
tournament this spring in which this group will represent
Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt enters the tournament ranked No. 24 in the Golfweek/Sagarin
poll, which puts them fifth in the SEC. Individually, Snedeker
is ranked No. 4 by Golfstat and fifth in the Golfweek/Sagarin
poll and is currently the top golfer in the SEC.
This is the third consecutive year the SEC Men's Golf Championship
has been played at the Seaside Golf Course. Last year, Auburn
shot a three-round score of 857 to win the team title by
seven shots over Florida (864) and nine shots over Georgia
(866). Florida's Camilo Benedetti took the individual title
with an even-par 210.
Seventy years of history enrich the Seaside Golf Course
at Sea Island that crosses generations of golf greats: Bobby
Jones, Sam Snead, Davis Love III. It began as the Seaside
Nine, built by Colt & Alison in 1920s. In 1930, Robert
Tyre "Bobby" Jones called it "one of the
best nine holes I've ever seen." Now it's been recreated
as the new 18-hole Seaside Course, skillfully achieved by
architect Tom Fazio. His vision was to honor the tradition
and integrity of the original design, yet carve a completely
original, challenging and contemporary layout. And he has
masterfully succeeded.
