Vanderbilt's Snedeker Invited to Compete in Prestigious All-America Golf
Classic 10/24/02
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Vanderbilt senior Brandt Snedeker is one of the nation's
24 elite golfers to be invited to compete in the 28th annual Western Refining
College All-America Golf Classic Nov. 24-26 in El Paso, Texas. The tournament,
hosted by the Sun Bowl Association, will be played at the par-71, 6,781-yard
El Paso Country Club.
Snedeker is coming off his third consecutive tournament victory after claiming
medalist honors Tuesday at the Tennessee Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions
in Knoxville, Tenn. Prior to this week's win, the Nashville native took the
individual titles at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Nashville and the Gary
Koch Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
Snedeker has now carded eight consecutive rounds in the 60s and 10 of his
11 rounds this season have been below par. While on this torrid pace, he has
dropped his stroke average to 68.36, which leads the SEC by more than two
strokes.
In the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Poll, which does not reflect the victory at
this week's Tennessee Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions, Snedeker climbed
from No. 6 to No. 3 in the nation. In the three tournaments taken into consideration
for this poll, Snedeker is 216-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 versus Top-25 players, 10-1-1
against Top-50 players and 20-1-1 versus Top-100 competition.
The 24 competitors at the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic
will play 36 holes Monday, Nov. 25 and finish the tournament with 18 holes
Tuesday, Nov. 26. Also included in the events are a long drive contest and
a putting contest.
Throughout the years, many Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic
competitors have gone on to pursue successful careers in the Professional
Golfers' Association of America and on the PGA Tour. Some of the past champions
include Notah Begay (1994), David Duval (1991), Davis Love III (1984), Jerry
Pate (1974) and Tiger Woods (1995).
Each university is awarded a $1,000-scholarship if a golfer from that school
competes in the tournament.
Snedeker and the rest of the Commodores are back in action November 4-5 at
The Prestige in Palm Springs, Calif.
