Fifth, Snedeker Third at The Prestige 11/5/02
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt men's golf team ended its
fall season finishing fifth with a 16-over-par score of 880
at The Prestige in La Quinta, Calif. Texas Christian claimed
the team title with an 11-under-par score of 853 and Kansas'
Chris Marshall took the top individual spot with a nine-under-par
score of 207 on the par-72, 6,841-yard La Quinta Mountain
Course.
The Commodores finished the first round in seventh place
after shooting a seven-over-par 295 and were forced to halt
their second round Monday because of darkness. After completing
a team round of 291 in the second 18 holes, Vanderbilt finished
the tournament with a final round six-over-par 294.
Individually, senior Brandt Snedeker's attempt to capture
four consecutive tournament titles came up four strokes short
as he finished in third place with a five-under-par score
of 211. Previously, the Nashville native had won the Mason
Rudolph Championship, Gary Koch Intercollegiate and the Tennessee
Tournament of Champions.
Snedeker completes the fall with a 68.79 stroke average after
finishing in the 60s in nine of his last 11 rounds and ending
the fall with 13 of his 14 rounds below par. In his five fall
tournaments, Snedeker recorded three first-place finishes,
one second-place finish and one third-place finish.
Senior Craig Dunlap concluded his most successful semester
as a Commodore, finishing in a tie for 28th place with a six-over-par
222. Sophomores Lance Goodson and Ben McClung both tied for
48th place with scores of 11-over-par 227. Rounding out the
Commodore team was sophomore Mark Donnell, who finished tied
for 56th place with a 13-over-par 229.
Vanderbilt completed the five-tournament fall schedule with
top-seven finishes in each event, including the tournament
title at the Mason Rudolph Championship. In 14 team rounds
this fall, the Commodores compiled a 287 team stroke average
and finished below par as a team in three of the five events.
The next action for the Commodores will come February 8-9
when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take part in the
Gator Invitational.

Men's Golf Seventh After First Day at The Prestige 11/4/02
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Vanderbilt men's golf team was in
seventh place with a seven-over-par 295 after the first round
at The Prestige in La Quinta, Calif. Monday's play was scheduled
for two rounds, but darkness halted play with over half the
field still needing a few holes to complete the second round.
Texas Christian University fired a 4-under par, 284, and
holds a two-stroke lead over UC Irvine (286) following Monday's
first round, played on the par-72, 6,841-yard La Quinta Resort
Mountain Course.
TCU and UC Irvine were the only two teams in the 18-team
field to break par in the morning round. The University of
the Pacific, highlighted by first-round leader Matt Hansen's
5-under par, 67, is in third place following a 3-over par,
291. UCLA and Washington are tied for fourth, eights strokes
off the lead after both teams shot 4-over par, 292.
UC Davis (293), Vanderbilt (295), Stanford (298), Yale (298)
and Pepperdine (299) round out the top 10. Kansas (300), completed
its round in 11th, followed by Rice (301), San Diego (301),
Air Force (302), UC San Diego (303), Oregon (304), UC Santa
Barbara (304) and Colorado (311).
Individually, Hansen's 67 leads TCU's David Schultz by one
shot following a 4-under par, 68, by Schultz. Stanford's Jim
Seki and UC Irvine's Jay Choe both completed the first round
with identical, 3-under par, 69's. There was a five-way tie
for fifth at 2-under par, 70, which includes Kansas' Chris
Marshall, UC Irvine's Mike Lavery, San Diego's Tim Cureton,
UCLA's Spencer Levin and Oregon's Gregg LaVoie.
The Prestige At PGA WEST will begin Tuesday morning at 7
a.m. with the completion of the second round immediately followed
by the final 18 holes.
