Men's Golf Signs Arizona Standout

April 9, 1999
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Vanderbilt men's golf coach Jim Ragan announced Friday the signing of Jason Dallas to attend Vanderbilt University during the 1999-2000 season.

Dallas, a native of Gilbert, Ariz., is nationally recognized as an excellent junior golfer. He finished in the top 32 in match play in the prestigious Western Junior in 1997 and 1998. In 1996, he tied for 15th at the Big "I" Classic and also finished in the top 32 in match play at the United States Junior.

"He is an extremely good ball striker and has proven he can shoot some really low scores and compete on a national level," Ragan said of Dallas, who won the AJGA Las Vegas Founders Legacy at age 14. "Jason will be an impact player for us next year. I feel very fortunate to have signed a player of this caliber."

Other top performances include winning the 1998 Scottsdale City Amateur, shooting rounds of 66 and 72 for a total of 138. In 1997, Dallas won the Western Skies Men's Club Championship by firing rounds of 70 and 67 for a total of 137. He also is the Western Skies course record holder with a 62.

Dallas' high school accomplishments also are impressive. He finished second in the 1998 Arizona 5A State High School Championship after firing a 67 in the opening round. The only golfer to beat Dallas in that tournament was fellow Vanderbilt signee, Nick Manthey of Mesa, Ariz. Dallas completed the 1998 season with a stroke average below par and a streak of four years in which he did not finish lower than fifth at the state championships.

Dallas joins Manthey and Nashville's Brandt Snedeker as Vanderbilt's incoming class of 1999.
