Bend, Indiana - The tenth-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores (9-5,
5-0) dropped a heartbreaking 10-9 overtime decision to the
eighth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-4, 5-1) Friday
in NCAA lacrosse action. Junior Jeannie Crawley posted her
eighth hat-trick of the season for Vanderbilt in the loss.
The
first half was marked by each team making four-goal runs.
The Irish struck first, and had a 4-0 lead 15 minutes into
the half. Vanderbilt finally got on the board in the 20th
minute, with sophomore Jess Roguski scoring off a feed from
senior Liz Drennan. The Commodores would tie the game in the
29th minute and the teams went to the break with the score
4-4.
In
the second half, the two teams traded goals before Vanderbilt
opened up another four-goal run. A goal by senior Kinsey Osberg,
assisted by Drennan, gave the Commodores a 9-6 lead with 11
minutes remaining. The lead held late into the game, but the
Irish surged back, scoring three goals in the final two minutes
to take the game into overtime.
Notre
Dame's Natalie Loftus scored in the second minute of overtime
and the Irish burned the five remaining minutes to take the
10-9 win.
Senior
Megan Lewis caused four turnovers and scooped six ground balls
for the Commodore defense, while freshman goalkeeper Ashley
Bastinelli made 11 key saves. The Irish out shot Vanderbilt
33-16 and were awarded 16 more free position shots than the
Commodores.
The
Commodores play the final match of their 2002 regular season
on Saturday, May 4, when the travel to face American Lacrosse
Conference opponent Northwestern.
