Commodores Clipped By #5 Virginia, 17-13
Tenn. -- The 12th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores weathered torrential
downpours and fifth-ranked Virginia in their NCAA lacrosse
matchup Sunday at Vanderbilt Stadium, but dropped a 13-17
decision to the Cavaliers, who were led by Lauren Aumiller's
seven-point performance. Vanderbilt sophomore Michelle Allen
had four goals in the game, which was delayed twice due to
The Commodores got off to a slow start, allowing Virginia
to score the first three goals in the game. Junior Tara Schmucker
put Vanderbilt on the board with her goal in the ninth minute.
The Cavaliers would stretch their lead to 7-3 before the Commodores
went on a run of their own to get within a goal. Virginia
then closed out the half with three straight goals to take
a 10-6 lead to the break.
In the second half Vanderbilt pulled within two goals as Allen
finished a hat trick in the 43rd minute. The Cavaliers answered,
however, scoring five goals in a row to take a 16-9 lead.
Vanderbilt's defense was neutralized by fouls, as four of
Virginia's seven second half goals were scored on free position
shots. Vanderbilt scored four of the final five goals of the
game, but could not complete the comeback.
Sophomores Mary McCeney and Jess Roguski led the Commodores
with five and four draws, respectively, as Vanderbilt matched
Virginia, ranked second in the nation in draw controls, with
16 draws. Senior Megan Lewis had five ground balls on the
day to lead the Commodore defense.
The Commodores head out on their final road trip Friday to
face Notre Dame. Their last regular season match is Saturday
against American Lacrosse Conference opponent Northwestern.
