Dores Second Half Surge Downs Stanford 15-10
Nashville
-- Second half hat-tricks by senior Kinsey Osberg and sophomore
Mary McCeney lifted the tenth-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores
to a 15-10 victory over the Stanford Cardinal Thursday in
NCAA women's lacrosse action. The Commodores trailed 6-5 at
halftime, but used seven unanswered goals in the middle of
the second half to earn a convincing win.
The Cardinal scored the first two goals of the game and held
their initial lead until the 17th minute. The Commodores fought
back to take the lead, but would relinquish it before half.
Stanford scored with 22 seconds left in the first half to
take a 6-5 lead to the break.
In
the second half, Vanderbilt quickly tied the game at six,
but then allowed two goals and trailed by a pair with 24 minutes
to play. In the 38th minute, Osberg scored a goal that would
ignite a seven goal run by the Commodores. Stanford fought
back, scoring two late goals, but the Vanderbilt defense held
strong to earn the 15-10 victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Exline made her first career start.
She had five saves behind a tough Commodore defense, and held
the Stanford attack scoreless for almost 20 minutes in the
second half.
In the second half, the Commodores scored ten goals on only
fifteen shots. Osberg and McCeney scored six goals on only
seven shots, with junior Jeannie Crawley adding two goals
and an assist. Past the halfway point of the season, Crawley
has scored in every game this year. Sophomore Jess Roguski
led the Commodores offensively, scoring three goals and adding
a pair of assists. She also had five draw controls on the
day, helping to give Vanderbilt a 19-8 advantage on the draw.
"We challenged ourselves to play tough today," said
Roguski. "In the second half, we had a lot of emotion
and played well as a unit. We really came together and that
was the difference in the game today."
