Dores Claw Out 13-12 Win Over Brown Bears
Nashville, Tennessee -- Junior Jeannie Crawley scored the
game-winning goal with 25 seconds remaining in the second
half to give the #11 Vanderbilt Commodores a 13-12 victory
over the Brown Bears in NCAA women's lacrosse action Sunday
afternoon. Sophomore Kelly Devlin led the Commodore attack,
connecting on all four of her shot attempts.
The match started quickly, with Vanderbilt's Devlin scoring
in the third minute of the game only to be answered ten seconds
later by Brown's Katie Russell. This would set the pace for
the rest of the match. Each team saw their own two-goal lead
disappear in the first half, which ended tied at six.
The second half was even more back and forth. The Bears struck
the first blow to take a lead which they held for only a minute
before the Commodores retaliated. The teams traded goals for
the entire second half.
With the score tied and two minutes to go, Vanderbilt's Devlin
connected on a free position shot to give the Commodores a
12-11 lead. Brown struck back with less than a minute on the
clock, as Katie Zabel scored to tie the game with 37 seconds
left. Crawley won the ensuing draw and drove down the field
to net her third goal of the game, the game-winner with only
25 seconds on the clock.
The high scoring affair included five lead changes and ten
ties. For Brown, Christine Anneberg scored four goals, while
Meredith Goodell added a hat-trick of her own. Sophomore Jess
Roguski turned in a four point performance for Vanderbilt,
scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists. Vanderbilt
defenders Megan Lewis (senior) and Bridget Morris (sophomore)
both had impressive performances, each causing four turnovers
and collecting a combined 11 ground balls.
"It's difficult moving from being the underdog to being
a team that has something to lose everytime they walk on the
field," said Devlin. "Rankings mean nothing. You
just have to fight for everything out there and our team showed
a lot of character and fight, especially towards the end of
the game."
