Comeback Halts Huskies, 9-7
The Vanderbilt women's lacrosse team used a hat-trick by sophomore
Kelly Devlin and a pair of goals by teammate Jeannie Crawley
to defeat the University of Connecticut Huskies by a score
of 9-7. The Commodores trailed 5-2 early in the second half,
but twice scored three unanswered goals to earn the victory.
In the first half, Connecticut started off with a 2-0 lead
on goals by Michelle Wardwell and Pamela Lowie. Senior Liz
Drennan put the Commodores on the board in the 14th minute
off an assist from sophomore Jess Roguski. Devlin tied the
score at two in the 29th minute to take the game into the
break all knotted up.
The Huskies opened the second half with three straight goals
to take the score to 5-2. Senior Kinsey Osberg broke the Commodores'
draught at 33:31 off a Drennan assist. Roguski and fellow
sophomore Mary McCeney would also score for Vanderbilt to
even up the game at 5-5. The teams would trade goals until
the 55th minute, when the Commodores took the lead for good.
Devlin and Crawley each had two goals in the final 12 minutes.
"It was a great comeback for our team today," said
Head Coach Cathy Swezey We did the things in the last 20 minutes
of the game that allowed us to come out on top. Our team will
be very dangerous when we decide to do that for 60 minutes."
The Commodores began a five-game homestand today. Their next
match is against New Hampshire is March 20 at 3 p.m. The Wildcats
defeated the Duquesne Dukes 7-5 today in other action at Vanderbilt
