Behind
hat tricks from junior Jeannie Crawley and sophomore Jess
Roguski, the Vanderbilt women's lacrosse team opened their
season Sunday with a 7-4 victory over the 14th ranked Johns
Hopkins Blue Jays. The match marked the first contest of the
newly formed American Lacrosse Conference.
Vanderbilt opened the scoring when Crawley converted a free
position shot only 39 seconds into the game. Roguski added
to the lead two minutes later off an assist from senior Kinsey
Osberg. Later in the half, both scenarios were repeated and
the Commodores took a 4-2 lead into the break.
In the second half, Hopkins would twice come within a goal
of the Commodores, but Vanderbilt answered each time, with
Crawley finishing off her hat trick of free position goals
and sophomore Mary McCeney tallying a score from an assist
by senior Liz Drennan. Roguski completed her hat trick in
the 57th minute to give the Commodores the 7-4 win.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli made fifteen saves behind
a strong Commodore defense.
The Commodores will host Penn State this Saturday in another
league game. The game will be the first match of the year
for the Nittany Lions, who are ranked 12th in the nation by
Lacrosse Magazine and first in the American Lacrosse Conference
in preseason polls.
