#19 Vanderbilt 18, Notre Dame 9
April 13, 1999
NASHVILLE- April Tellam (Newtown Square, Pa.) scored a career high seven goals and added three assists for her second ten-point game of the season, and Amanda Rice (Pipersville, Pa.), Kinsey Osberg (Darien, Conn.), and Sarah Odell (Surrey, England) each scored three times, as Vanderbilt raced to a 10-2 halftime lead, and cruised to an 18-9 victory over the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on Tuesday afternoon. Emily Lough (Baltimore, Md.) made nine saves while allowing just two goals in the first thirty minutes of play, and Shana Crabtree (Alexandria, Va.) stopped five shots in thirty minutes of relief.
"Emily made a couple of big saves in the first half", said VU head coach Cathy Swezey.
Lael O'Shaugnessy led the Irish (8-3) in scoring with five goals and two assists. Carrie Marshall made fourteen saves in defeat.
VU (5-7) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Commodores were aided greatly by the play of Lough, who stopped seven of the first eight shots she faced.
"They found some holes in the defense in the first half and had some open shots, but I was playing well," said Lough.
After O'Shaughnessy put the Irish on the board about 15 minutes into the game, Vandy went on a 7-1 run to close the half, courtesy of three goals by Odell, two from Rice, and one each from, Tellam and Osberg. The Irish put up the first tally of the second half on O'Shaughnessy's second. The two teams more or less traded goals for the rest of the contest, with Tellam registering five in the second half, and O'Shaughnessy four for the Irish.
The win breaks a school-record four-game losing streak for the Commodores, in which they lost the first three by one goal each.
"Our last few games have been rocky," commented Tellam. "But today we played well and created space for our offense."
