#14 Women's Lacrosse Upends #11 George Mason, 12-10
March 16, 1999
VU raced to a 3-0 lead courtesy of one goal by Tellam and two by Ehst before GMU (2-1) broke on the board with Liz Paolišs first of four goals on the afternoon.
VU took an 8-6 lead into halftime, and increased its lead to three goals on Ehst's fourth of the game. GMU cut the lead to 9-8 on Paoli's fourth, but that was as close the Patriots would come. Ehst and Tellam each scored again, and Caroline Mans added an insurance goal with 3:26 to play.
"It's an incredible feeling, we were the better team today, and we wanted to let the country know that wešre for real," said Tellam.
The Commodore defense tightened in the second half, holding Paoli, GMU's second-leading scorer coming into the game, to just one goal.
"We weren't sliding in the first half on defense," said junior defensive specialist Meredith Shuey, who, along with Becky Kehl, held Paoli in check for the second half. "In the second half, we were able to stop their set up play (for Paoli) by double-teaming."
Bettina Guevara made ten stops in the loss for George Mason.
Vanderbilt (3-2) will host Duke on Friday at 3 p.m.
