Vanderbilt Tops at Commodore Classic

September 26, 1998

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Vanderbilt women's cross country team finished tied for first with Southeast Missouri at Saturday's Commodore Classic with a score of 48. The Vanderbilt men recorded a ninth-place finish with a score of 224.

The Vanderbilt women finished atop the standings by placing their top five runners in the top 14 overall. Senior Stacey Carpenter led the way for the Commodores, placing third with a time of 18:47 on the 5K course. That time was 1:20 better than her performance in last year's Commodore Classic.

Rounding out the top five for Vanderbilt was freshman Colleen Byrne (8th, 19:30), sophomore Kelly Howisey (11th, 19:40), junior Keri Freeman (12th, 19:43) and junior Kim Trenbath (14th, 19:57). Freeman and Trenbath joined Carpenter by improving their Commodore Classic time with Freemen improving by 1:20 and Trenbath improving by 2:00.

"Strategically, we made a mistake and I'm taking the blame on that one," Vanderbilt head coach Paul Arceneaux said of the women's team. "We were too laid back in the first mile and because of that, Southeast Missouri built up a lead we couldn't overcome.

"Individually, Carpenter had a tremendous day and Freeman gave a great effort. Colleen Byrne continues to impress as she takes the reigns and becomes a team leader."

On the men's side, junior Mark Rosenthal paced the Vanderbilt squad as he finished 31st with a time of 28:22 on the 8K course. That mark was 0:07 better than Rosenthal's performance in last year's Commodore Classic.

Completing the top five for Vanderbilt was senior Ted Perrault (40th, 28:47), junior David Scales (55th, 29:11), freshman Michael Masterson (64th, 29:38) and Michael Brookshire (68th, 29:53).

The men also had great improvements in their Commodore Classic times from last year. Scales was 1:30 better, Brookshire was 1:00 better and Perrault was 0:40 better.

"Rarely are we good in September," Arceneaux said of the men's team. "With that in mind, I feel good about our performance today because it gives us a good foundation to build from and we should see a plethora of personal records later in the season."
