Vanderbilt Athletics Department is making strides in the growth and development of its student-athletes. During the summer of 1998, Vanderbilt applied and was selected for inclusion into the CH.A.M.P.S./Life Skills Program created by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The acronym CH.A.M.P.S. embodys the idea that this program is Challenging Athletes Minds for Personal Success. Vanderbilt's CHAMPS program is designed to provide an optimum experience for every student-athlete. The program focuses on four major components: personal, career, leadership development, and community service. Since its inception, the Vanderbilt CHAMPS/Life Skills program has enjoyed great success and it continues to prepare its student-athletes for the eventual " real world".

Fostering the development of personal growth is a fundamental component of the Vanderbilt CHAMPS Life Skills program.
