Vanderbilt Looks to Continue Win Streak
With Lipscomb Visit After finishing the first week of the
2002 season with a 3-0 mark, the Vanderbilt Commodores play
host to Lipscomb (0-6) Wed., Feb. 20, at Hawkins Field. Week
one saw plenty of offense as the Commodores scored 23 runs
on 38 hits, nine doubles and two home runs. Included in the
outburst was a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth
(2/12) in the season opener vs. Tennessee Tech and a grand
slam Sunday (2/17) that sparked a 10-5 win over West Virginia.
The Commodores early run is their best since beginning the
1998 campaign 10-0. Karl Nonemaker’s .545 batting average
(6-for-11) leads the team and ranks fourthbest in the Southeastern
Conference. John Kaye is batting .400 (4-for-10) with three
doubles, three runs scored, 4 RBI and four walks. In their
first season at the Division-I level, the Bisons have struggled
with a difficult schedule, losing three-game series at Troy
State and and Southern Mississippi. After today’s game against
Vanderbilt, Lipscomb head to the Sunshine State to battle
Kansas State, Florida International and the 2001 College World
Series champions, University of Miami. Bison second baseman
Jeremy George leads the team with a .364 batting average (8-for-22)
and three doubles.
- Head Coach Roy Mewbourne registered his 900th career coaching
win Saturday when Vanderbilt edged West Virginia 7-6. He is
the 35th coach in history to reach the 900-win plateau and
ranks 19th among active coaches in victories. Heading into
this week, he holds a career mark of 901-654-9.
- Senior outfielder Karl Nonemaker went 6- for-11 (.545)
during the opening week of the season with a double, a triple,
four runs scored and three RBI. Nonemaker moved into a three-way
tie for sixth place on the VU alltime hits list with 220.
