Scott, Lewis Lift Vanderbilt to 4-3 Win Over The
Citadel
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Worth Scott recorded three RBI and
doubled in the game-winning run while Jensen Lewis struck
out five and allowed only one hit in three innings of
relief to lift Vanderbilt past The Citadel 4-3, Saturday,
Feb. 15, at the ESPN Radio 1340 Shootout.
Scott brought the Commodores (1-1) back from a 3-1
deficit in the sixth inning when he smashed a one-out
two-run home run to right field off Bulldogs starter
John Ellis. Two innings later, Ryan Godfrey began the
eighth with a single to right field off The Citadel
(0-2) reliever Andy Phillips (0-1). Scott knocked Godfrey
in two batters later with a double into left center
field to Vanderbilt a 4-3 lead.
Lewis (1-0) came on in relief in the seventh inning
for Commodore starter Robert Ransom. Lewis retired the
first eight batters he faced until Chris Ard doubled
down the third-base line in the ninth. However, Lewis
struck out the following two batters to end the game.
Vanderbilt recorded 14 hits in the game and three Commodores
posted three hits, including Ryan Klosterman (3-for-4),
Warner Jones (3-for-4) and Scott (3-for-4).
Vanderbilt's win was the first school victory for new
head coach Tim Corbin.
Vanderbilt took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Klosterman was hit by a pitch, took third base on a
bunt single by Matt Zeller and scored on a ground out
by Tony Mansolino.
The Citadel answered in the bottom of the frame on
a RBI single by Josh Stackley. The Bulldogs added a
run in the second when Ard scored on a double play ground
out by Will Cooker. The lead grew to 3-1 in the fourth
when Trent Weather scored from third base on a balk
by Ransom.
Ransom pitched six innings for the Commodores and gave
up six hits and two earned runs while striking out five.
Ellis gave up nine hits and two earned runs in 5.1
innings of work for The Citadel.
Vanderbilt concludes play at the ESPN Radio 1340 Shootout
Sunday against James Madison. Game time is set for 1:30
p.m. ET.
