As a Sophomore (2002): Started all of Vanderbilt's 51 games (46 games
at third base; five at designated hitter)... One of four VU players to start
all of the team's games... Tied for second in the league with 13 hit by pitches;
led the league with seven hit by pitches in conference games... Finished third
on the team with eight multi-RBI games... Tied for fourth on the team with 14
multi-hit games... Ranked among VU's top five batters in nine categories, including
walks (tied for first-24), RBI (second-35), home runs (third-6) on base percentage
(third-.389), slugging percentage (fourth-.432), runs scored (fourth-32), doubles
(fourth-12), total bases (tied for fourth-82) and hits (fifth-52)... Ended the
year fourth on the team with 231 plate appearances and 190 at bats...Hit safely
in 35 of 51 games, never going more than three games without a hit... Ended
the year on a season-high six-game hit streak, batting .320 (8-for-25) with
seven RBI, two home runs and runs scored... Went .417 (5-for-12) in the Georgia
series with three doubles, three RBI and four runs scored... Four days after
the death of his father (Cesar), Nicolas hit an emotional solo homer that sparked
an 11-5 win over Connecticut (3/1)... Hit walk-off three-run home run to win
season opener against Tennessee Tech 6-4; homer was the first in newly completed
Hawkins Field... Hit .209 with five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI during
the 2002 summer with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League... Selected
to the Cape Cod All-Star East team and finished second in the league's All-Star
Home Run Derby.
As a Freshman (2001): Appeared in 13 games with one start... Made first
collegiate start at UAB (3/6), walking twice... Recorded first collegiate hit
(a double) and RBI against Bradley (2/25)... Hit .290 with a league-high 10
home runs during the summer with the Florence Red Wolves of the Coastal Plains
League. High School: Helped lead Westminster Christian to three state titles
in 1996-98, and the 2000 district championship... Captain of team his senior
season... Batted .347 with three home runs, seven doubles and six stolen bases
as a senior... Named second team All-Dade County... Batted .400 with two home
runs, 12 doubles, and eight stolen bases as a junior... Holds school record
for hits in a game with five... Lettered in basketball and football in 1999
