Honors Points - College Scholars Program

To graduate with "Honors in the College of Arts and Science,"  a member of the College Scholars Program must earn 15 honors points by achieving a grade of "B" or better in the following types of courses:

Honors Seminars:

A maximum of 13 points earned by taking Honors Seminars can be applied to the total of 15 points.

Three (3) points when seminar is taken for the first time in an area--Humanities (Honors 181 or 181W), Science and the World (Honors 182), Social Science (Honors 183), or Basic Science (Honors 185a/b) for CPLE; Humanities and Creative Arts ( Honors 181), Perspectives (Honors 182), Social and Behavioral Science (Honors 183), History and Culture of the United States (Honors 184), Mathematics and Natural Science (Honors 185) and International Cultures (Honors 186) for AXLE.  One (
1) point if honors credit for a seminar in that area has already been earned (e.g., taking a second Social Science or Social and Behavioral Science seminar)

Other Courses:

A maximum of two (2) points earned from any one department can be applied to the total of 15 points.

One (1) point for "enriched" courses in which student completes an honors project in addition to the work required for the class.

A proposal, signed by both student and instructor, must be submitted in writing to the Director of the Program for approval within four weeks of the beginning of the semester.  The work for the honors point should be in addition to the work assigned for the course and roughly equivalent to one-third of the work expected for the course. The student must earn a B or better in the class and the instructor must inform the Director in writing at the end of the semester that the work has been successfully completed.

One (1) point for independent study courses (usually in the major) which carry at least three credit hours.

A proposal, signed by both the student and instructor, must be submitted in writing to the Director of the Program for approval within four weeks of the beginning of the semester.

One (1) point for designated honors sections of certain lecture courses and departmental honors courses.

The Director of the College Scholars Program must be notified of departmental honors courses to be applied to College Honors three months prior to graduation date.  If material covered in each is significantly different, independent and enriched courses, honors sections and departmental honors courses can be taken more than once.
