February 3, 2011—Vanderbilt Football Coach James Franklin got some great presents for his 39th birthday, which fell on National Signing Day, Feb. 2.
“Because of this staff, I was able to open up a lot of presents this morning,” Franklin said.
Two four-star recruits signed to play for the Commodores: Lafonte Thourogood out of Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, Va., at quarterback, and Dillon van der Wal out of Oaks Christian High School in Woodland Hills, Calif., at tight end/defensive end. Both had verbally committed elsewhere, but ended up signing with the Commodores.
February 2, 2011—Vanderbilt offensive line coach Herb Hand scrolled through his Twitter feed on his cell phone and noted fans talking trash at him.
As one noted, someone’s mad Vanderbilt stole a player away.
Yes, Vanderbilt — the private school constantly playing catch up in the Southeastern Conference — did just that to a few schools Wednesday. New coach James Franklin’s biggest catch was quarterback Lafonte Thourogood, who had been headed to Virginia Tech until the Commodores lured him away.
“That was a big one,” Franklin said with a big smile after talking to Thourogood on the phone.
