Boys Exploring Science and Technology (BEST) Summer Camp

Age: Current 7th & 8th graders
Limited financial aid is available.
This is a one-week day camp for current 7th and 8th grade boys conducted in the bioscience labs at Vanderbilt. Campers will have opportunities to perform fun hands-on science activities and observe interesting demonstrations. This program is designed to encourage boys' interest in science and science-related activities.

Girls and Science Summer Camp (GAS)

Session 1: July 11 - 15, 2011 (current 7th graders)

The goals of the GAS Camp are to engage girls in science activities, to foster confidence in science achievement, and to encourage girls' enrollment in high school science courses. The camp is held in the biosciences laboratories at Vanderbilt and staffed by middle and high school teachers. Campers participate in doing hands-on science activities and interact with women in science-related careers. There is one week-long session for girls currently in 7th grade and a week-long session for girls currently in 8th grade.

iD Tech Camps: Hands-On Tech Fun!
Check out America’s #1 technology camp. During this weeklong, day and overnight program, ages 7-17 build robots, create video games, design websites with Flash®, film digital movies, learn programming and more. With one computer per student and an average of six students per staff, students are given the attention they need to excel and take home a project at the end of the weeklong course. Programs are located at over 50 prestigious universities in 23 states, including Vanderbilt University. Special Teen programs include: iD Gaming Academy iD Film Academy and a Study Abroad program in Spain.

Pre-College PAVE Program
PAVE, celebrating its twenty-first anniversary, is a six-week pre-college program designed to strengthen the academic skills of students who are planning to enter a college engineering, pre-medical, science or technology program. The program is appropriate for high school students finishing the 11th grade or 12th grade (2010/2011 school year). Limited need-based financial support is available.

Programs for Talented Youth
Vanderbilt Summer Academy (VSA)
Vanderbilt University offers intensive one-, two-, and three-week summer residential programs for academically talented rising 8th-12th grade students. VSA provides a highly stimulating and challenging intellectual environment while allowing students to have lots of fun and to form lasting friendships. Each student enrolls in one course for 6 hours of instruction per day. The classes, taught by Vanderbilt faculty and scholars, are interdisciplinary and include topics such as forensic chemistry, filmmaking, world religions, and more. Students reside on campus under the supervision of residential staff and enjoy a full program of social and recreational activities.

Summer Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young (SAVY)
Summer Academy at Vanderbilt for the Young (SAVY) Vanderbilt University offers intensive one- or two-week full-day summer programs for academically talented rising 1st-7th grade students. SAVY provides a highly stimulating and challenging intellectual environment while allowing students to have lots of fun and to form lasting friendships. Each student enrolls in one course for either one or two weeks. The classes, taught by Vanderbilt faculty and esteemed teachers, include topics such as Legos and Robotics, Budding Botanists, Moli Stone Math, and more. In the afternoons, rising 1st-5th grade students will enjoy enrichment activities, including puzzle hunting, chess, and dance among others. Rising 6th and 7th grade students will continue their accelerated courses in the afternoon to have a pre-collegiate experience.

Programs for Talented Youth Professional Development
Tennessee Employment Standard: Gifted Education Do your teachers need training in gifted education? Please have them join us for a two-week session filled with meaningful learning experiences, lectures from national experts in gifted education, and opportunities to interact with other professionals from across the state. Vanderbilt professors Donna Ford and Tamra Stambaugh will lead the program, where participants will learn characteristics and identification of gifted learners in the first week and curriculum and instructional strategies for gifted learners in the second week. Participants will learn, view, and apply what they learn about this special population. Upon successful completion of the two-week program, participants will be awarded the document indicating that the employment standard has been met.

Dyer Observers Space Science Camp
Level I:
The focus of the camp, held at Dyer Observatory, is on astronomy and space science. The camp curriculum was created by an expert team of astronomy professors, space scientists and area science teachers.
Campers learn about optics and why seasons change, create sundials, build a model satellite, launch water rockets, and create a "comet." They also use airplane flight simulators every day as they learn take-off and landing techniques and learn about cutting edge NASA innovations and programs. In addition, the campers will experience an evening of celestial viewing through the large Seyfert Telescope.
Dyer Observers Space Science Camp supports students in their exploration of the worlds of science, math, engineering, and technology, and opens up their minds to future career possibilities in these fields. Campers interact with astronomers and astronauts who are respected researchers and seasoned instructors. Participation in group activities builds self-confidence, problem solving skills and social skills. This camp is geared for the student who is serious about science. There will be presentations by astronomers along with hands-on activities. Campers will participate in a day-long trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL.

Campers participate in experiments with cryogenics, electromagnetism, rocketry, and are trained in cross country flight simulation. Campers will take an ultimate field trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center for a specially guided tour and exciting hands-on lab experiences. They will learn about cutting-edge NASA innovations and programs. In addition, weather permitting, there will be an evening of celestial viewing through Dyer’s large Seyfert Telescope for campers and their families.
The Advanced Dyer Observers Space Science Camp supports students who are serious about science in their exploration of the worlds of science, math, engineering, and technology, and opens up their minds to future career possibilities in these fields.
