Space Exploration Science Camp
Sponsored by the Dyer Observatory

Level I:
The camp is held at Dyer Observatory and focuses on a mix of astronomy and space exploration with hands-on engaging learning adventures. Campers learn about optics and why seasons change, create sundials, build a model satellite, launch water rockets, and create a "comet." They also use airplane flight simulators every day as they learn take-off and landing techniques. This activity culminates in a real airplane flight over Nashville out of the Donelson airport. In addition, the campers will experience an evening of celestial viewing through the large Seyfert Telescope.

Space Exploration Science Camp supports lower level middle-school students in their exploration of the worlds of science, math and technology, and opens up their minds to future career possibilities in these fields. Campers interact with astronomers and astronauts who are respected researchers and seasoned instructors. Participation in group activities builds self-confidence, problem solving skills and social skills.

TRIAD Summer Camp for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

The TRIAD Social Skills Summer Camp, offered in partnership with the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, is an intensive social skills program designed specifically for children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders who are between the ages of 6 and 21, and who have language and reading skills.

TRIAD is dedicated to providing a fun, structured camp environment in which all children can learn and have successful interactions with their peers. Children with typical development between the ages of 6 and 13 serve as models for appropriate social and communication behaviors and as interactive partners for the campers with autism. Campers are given many opportunities to practice their social skills during structured lessons and other camp activities. Counselors use a combination of visual structure and behavioral strategies to help campers experience success during camp activities. In addition, adolescent campers work on pre-vocational skills both at camp and in the community through field trips and supervised pre-vocational opportunities. The camp is held at the University School of Nashville.
