Balloons, banners and students all part of Vanderbilt
Day on the Hill
State lawmakers learned about the significant impact of the university and medical center on all 95 counties in Tennessee during Vanderbilt’s sixth Day on the Hill. Black and gold balloons and 95 banners highlighting Vanderbilt’s specific contributions to each county decorated the halls of the Legislative Plaza on Tuesday, March 31.
Legislators had the opportunity to meet part of Vanderbilt’s leadership team during breakfast in the legislative cafeteria. Those attending included Dr. Jeffrey Balser, dean of the School of Medicine and incoming vice chancellor for health affairs; Dr. Kevin Churchwell, CEO and executive director, the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital; Larry Goldberg, CEO, Vanderbilt Hospital; and Beth Fortune, vice chancellor for public affairs. In addition, Vera Chatman, professor of the practice of human and organizational development, brought her class on health policy to Day on the Hill. Chatman is also a professor of medical education and administration.
“We work to convey how Vanderbilt makes an important difference across the state, not only in Middle Tennessee,” said Christine Bradley, assistant vice chancellor for Office of Community, Neighborhood and Government Relations. Her office compiles data on what Vanderbilt specifically contributes to each county – with figures ranging from the number of alumni and parents of Vanderbilt students living in the various counties to how much uncompensated care is provided by the medical center in those same areas.
