Joseph L. Rife delivered the Zarbin Memorial Lecture on his work at Kenchreai at Dartmouth College, as well as the keynote address for the "Real Greek Week" at Millsaps College.
Joseph L. Rife was honored to speak at Millsaps College on September 30 for the "Real Greek Week," a week-long celebration of ancient Greek culture sponsored by the Department of Classical Studies and colleagues. He discussed the importance of experiential learning in an international context for Classics students, with highlights from his educational and research programs overseas.
Prof. Rife also spoke about his recent work on Roman and Late Antique Greece, in particular as the director of American research at the archaeological site of Kenchreai, the eastern port of Corinth. These invited lectures belong to an ongoing series by Prof Rife on his work at Kenchreai that aim to present new ideas and results to a broad scholarly and public audience both in the USA and abroad in advance of publication in print.
At the invitation of the Department of Classics at Dartmouth College, he delivered the Zarbin Memorial Lecture on October 6, 2011. The presentation examined new perspectives concerning the social history of the eastern Roman provinces, particularly urban landscapes, cemeteries, and population dynamics, based on his work since 2002 at Kenchreai.
