This professional development workshop will provide an informative overview and discussion of works by some of Latin America's most renowned writers and poets. Professor William Luis, Chancellor's Professor of Spanish, will discuss Julia Alvarez's classic work In the Time of the Butterflies. Professor Cathy Jrade, Chancellor's Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, will give an overview of Spanish-American poetry from the period of Modernism forward, with special focus on the poems of Ruben Dario, Delmira Agustini, Cesar Vallejo, and Julia de Burgos. In both sessions, presenters will share strategies for incorporating discussion and analysis of Latin American literature into classroom discussion.
