Alma Guillermoprieto is one of the most trusted authorities on the cultural and political life of Mexico and South America.  A journalist in Latin America for thirty years, Guillermoprieto views history and society from an unusual angle, incorporating culture into everything she writes.  Writing for the New Yorker, she produced a series of groundbreaking stories on Latin American society and politics, covering such events as the Colombian civil war, post-Sandinista Nicaragua, late twentieth century Mexican presidential politics, and the "Dirty War" in Argentina.  These articles were later collected into two books: Looking for History and The Heart That Bleeds, widely considered a definitive portrait of Latin America during the "lost decade."

At this workshop, Alma Guillermoprieto will share experiences from her long career as a leading Latin American journalist.  Participants will be given a copy of The Heart That Bleeds to read in advance of the workshop and will have the opportunity to engage with the author, who from her unique perspective will provide insight into strategies for teaching Latin American history and culture.
