SUMMARY:Teacher Workshop - A Conversation with Alma Guillermoprieto\: Chronicling Latin America's Lost Decade
DESCRIPTION:Alma Guillermoprieto is one of the most trusted authorities on the cultural and political life of Mexico and South America.&nbsp\; A journalist in Latin America for thirty years\, Guillermoprieto views history and society from an unusual angle\, incorporating culture into everything she writes.&nbsp\; Writing for the New Yorker\, she produced a series of groundbreaking stories on Latin American society and politics\, covering such events as the Colombian civil war\, post-Sandinista Nicaragua\, late twentieth century Mexican presidential politics\, and the &quot\;Dirty War&quot\; in Argentina.&nbsp\; These articles were later collected into two books\: Looking for History and The Heart That Bleeds\, widely considered a definitive portrait of Latin America during the &quot\;lost decade.&quot\;\n\nAt this workshop\, Alma Guillermoprieto will share experiences from her long career as a leading Latin American journalist.&nbsp\; Participants will be given a copy of The Heart That Bleeds to read in advance of the workshop and will have the opportunity to engage with the author\, who from her unique perspective will provide insight into strategies for teaching Latin American history and culture.

DESCRIPTION:Guatemalan Scholars Network Conference\n11-12 October 2008\nVanderbilt  University (Nashville\, Tennessee)\n\nThe GSN invites you to participate in  its first ever Guatemalan Scholars Network Conference to be held 11-12  October 2008 at Vanderbilt University in Nashville\, Tennessee.&nbsp\; We plan for  the conference to open at noon on Saturday and close early afternoon Sunday.&nbsp\;  The purpose of\nthe conference is two-fold.&nbsp\; First\, to share our recent work  and views on the direction of Guatemalan studies (and Guatemala).&nbsp\; Second\,  using this as a basis\, to chart a new direction for the GSN as an  organization that seeks to contribute to not only scholarly knowledge of  Guatemala and the Maya but to positive change as well.\n\nThe conference  format will be based around roundtables.&nbsp\; We think this will be most  productive for our current purposes.&nbsp\; We do ask everyonewho plans to attend  to fill out the form below and include a brief abstract or description of  topics you would like to see discussed.&nbsp\; For the roundtable format\, such  abstracts are not strictly necessary\, and we do want to leave the discussion  as open as possible.&nbsp\; At the same time\, the formality of a title and a panel  will allow some members to be\nreimbursed for their expenses by their  universities.&nbsp\; We will organize participants into roundtables based on these  responses.\n\nThe plan is to have this be a pre-conference for a larger  gathering that we will plan to take place in Guatemala during the summer  2009.\n\nThe Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt will cover  hotel costs and main meals for participants.&nbsp\; The number of hotel rooms  is limited to 40 room nights\, so we ask that if your university will  cover all or part of the costs that you have them do that\; also we  are\nscheduling the times of the conference so that some may be able to  fly in Saturday and leave on Sunday.\n\nFor more information\, please  contact Susan Berger (berger@fordham.edu) or Ted Fischer  (edward.f.fischer@vanderbitl.edu).\n

DESCRIPTION:This professional development workshop will provide an informative overview and discussion of works by some of Latin America's most renowned writers and poets.&nbsp\; Professor William Luis\, Chancellor's Professor of Spanish\, will discuss Julia Alvarez's classic work In the Time of the Butterflies. Professor Cathy Jrade\, Chancellor's Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese\, will give an overview of Spanish-American poetry from the period of Modernism forward\, with special focus on the poems of Ruben Dario\, Delmira Agustini\, Cesar Vallejo\, and Julia de Burgos.&nbsp\; In both sessions\, presenters will share strategies for incorporating discussion and analysis of Latin American literature into classroom discussion.
