The Graduate Program in Chemistry provides students with a solid foundation in chemistry, while recognizing that solutions to many important problems require an interdisciplinary training. Students in our program have the opportunity to learn techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and/or theories from multiple disciplines as the background in specialized knowledge necessary to advance fundamental understanding or solve problems.

IN THE CLASSROOM

VU Chemistry faculty are respected senior researchers, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs who take seriously their commitment to preparing graduate students for a myriad of careers and postdoctoral education. Students are challenged in the classroom by senior faculty to develop a strong foundation in chemistry that paves the way to professional opportunities.

INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH

The Graduate Program in Chemistry provides students with a solid foundation in chemistry, while recognizing that solutions to many important problems require interdisciplinary training. Students in our program have the opportunity to learn techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and/or theories from multiple disciplines as the background in specialized knowledge necessary to advance fundamental understanding or solve problems.

IN THE LAB

Our program mirrors the working world - teamwork, experiment design and implementation, documentation, presentation of results, and publication. This intensive approach gives graduate students indispensable bench skills as well as hands-on experience in the technical/collaborative aspects of chemistry and its many applications. Together, this paves the way for their success.

COLLABORATION

With Vanderbilt's nationally recognized medical center located a block away from chemistry labs, students in the Graduate Program in Chemistry learn to work cohesively with peers and senior scientists from across the Vanderbilt community. Investigators from different fields - medicine, engineering, biology, physics - come together to find new ways of resolving challenges of health, the environment, energy, and society.

BEYOND THE LABORATORY

VU Chemistry is part of the vibrant life of Vanderbilt, a major top 20 university and Tier 1 research institution, located in Nashville, Tennessee, a city known for its music, innovation, entrepreneurship, and dynamic quality of life.
