Campus Partners

This work of the Center to support teaching and learning at Vanderbilt takes many shapes and durations, ranging from single conversations to multi-year collaborative projects. Because we hold these conversations and conduct collaborations across the University, the Center brings together people with shared visions for teaching and learning who might not otherwise recognize the interests they have in common. Through fostering and facilitating these alliances, we support Vanderbilt in practicing, valuing, and rewarding university teaching and learning as vital forms of scholarship.

Center for Ethics

The CFT co-sponsors with the Center for Ethics a workshop series entitled “The Ethics of Teaching.”  Each workshop features remarks about the intersection of ethics and teaching from 2 faculty members representing different disciplines followed by open discussion with workshop attendees.

CIRTL-Vanderbilt

CIRTL is a national network of 7 partner universities, funded by the National Science Foundation to work together to promote professional development in teaching and learning for faculty and future faculty. The goal of CIRTL-Vanderbilt is to improve communication between the various groups on campus who are involved in science, math and engineering education and to provide resources and activities that foster the exchange of ideas between Vanderbilt faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. 

The CFT is collaborating with CIRTL-Vanderbilt on several ongoing projects, including the STEM Lab Coordinator's Working Group, a group of a group of approximately 25 faculty and graduate students from natural sciences and engineering departments with an interest in teaching and learning in laboratory settings.

Committee on Undergraduate Information Literacy (CUIL)

Members of the University Library, the Writing Studio, and the CFT have formed this committee, devoted to advancing information literacy initiatives at Vanderbilt.  Still in the early stages of development, CUIL has developed a soon-to-be-released web tutorial on popular v. scholarly sources and will be presenting a session on conducting research for Vanderbilt Visions 2007-2008.

English Language Center (ELC)

The English Language Center and Center for Teaching co-administer the International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP). Teachers from the ELC assist with international teaching assistant (ITA) language evaluations at the beginning and end of each semester, and provide appropriate English language courses during the academic year. These courses typically include pronunciation, speaking and listening, communication skills, and academic tutorials. In all courses, the emphasis is on helping ITAs improve their oral English language skills for the classroom so that they can become fully integrated into the academic community at Vanderbilt. The ELC co-teaches a Teaching Practicum course for ITAs along with a staff member from the CFT. The English Language Center also employs student consultants to work as language partners with ITAs on language development.

Graduate School

The Center for Teaching works with the Graduate School to co-sponsor the Teaching Certificate program and the Celebration of Teaching event.

Graduate Student Professional and Personal Development Collaborative (GSPPD)

The Office of Career Development and Outcomes Analysis

The Office of Career Development and Outcomes Analysis provides career resources for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the biomedical and biological sciences. The Center for Teaching works closely with this office in supporting the development of these life-science graduate student and post-doctoral scholars in their development as teachers.

Vanderbilt Visions / The Commons

Vanderbilt Visions facilitates the transition of first-year students from high school to the challenging world of an internationally recognized research institution.  Members of the CFT have sat on the Executive Committee of Vanderbilt Visions, participated in the assessment of Vanderbilt Visions, and planned and facilitated the training of the faculty and student VUceptors lead individual groups in Vanderbilt Visions.  As outlined in Vanderbilt’s Quality Enhancement Plan for the ongoing reaffirmation of our accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Vanderbilt Visions serves as a bridge to The Commons, which will open in Fall 2008

The Writing Studio

Patricia Armstrong, one of our assistant directors, currently sits on the Writing Advisory Board, which counsels the Director of the Writing Studio and the Director of Undergraduate Writing on initiatives that support undergraduate writing at Vanderbilt.
