Two types of positions are available for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows for the academic year 2009-10: Graduate Teaching Fellows and Teaching Affiliates. They have a common application process.

Graduate Teaching Fellow
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Passion for teaching
- Classroom or lab teaching experience as a TA at Vanderbilt (or elsewhere) with evidence of teaching effectiveness
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Strong writing, communication, and planning/organizational skills
- Flexibility, imagination, energy
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and present workshops for TA Orientation (TAO), the Teaching Certificate Program, and Graduate Student Teaching Event for Professional Development (GradSTEP), as well as in response to special requests from departments
- Coordinate GradSTEP, working groups for graduate students, and various aspects of the Teaching Certificate Program
- Conduct small-group analyses in TA sections and labs
- Observe sections and labs of TAs (on digital videotape or live)
- Consult with TAs on their teaching
- Assist with new and ongoing Center for Teaching projects
- Serve as liaison to academic departments
TIME COMMITMENT:
- Approximately 70 hours in Summer 2009 (exact schedule may vary):
- Mid-May: organizational meeting
- Summer: responding to e-mails
- August 4-15: full-time training and intensive preparation for TA orientation
- August 19-20: TA Orientation
- August 25-29: debriefing activities and compiling materials from TA Orientation
- Average 20 hours/week from late August through mid-May
PAY:
- $16,000 ($1,600/month), paid monthly August-May
- Graduate student health insurance paid (if needed)
Teaching Affiliate
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Passion for teaching
- Strong writing, communication, and planning/organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Interest in workshop facilitation
- Flexibility, imagination, energy
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and present workshops as part of TA Orientation (TAO) in August
- Serve as liaison throughout academic year (1-2 hours per month) between TAO participants and Center for Teaching staff
This is a great opportunity for graduate students and post-docs who are interested in attending training sessions on teaching and getting some experience facilitating workshops, but who can only make a minimal commitment (1-2 hours per month) during the academic year.
TIME COMMITMENT:

- August 5-14: full-time training and intensive preparation for TA orientation
- August 18-19: TA Orientation
- August 24-28: debriefing activities
- During the Fall 2009 semester, Teaching Affiliates will spend about 5 hours engaging in a small project that will have a positive impact on graduate student teaching at Vanderbilt. This is an opportunity for Teaching Affiliates to exercise some creativity in pursuing a project they think will benefit TAs at Vanderbilt.
- Teaching Affiliates will also attend a lunch meeting in January 2010 during which they will share their fall projects and discuss various issues affecting TAs at Vanderbilt.
PAY:
$1,000 paid at the end of August 2009

- Application letter (including home and campus phone numbers + e-mail address), in which you:
- Indicate which position you are applying for (you may apply and be considered for both positions with one application letter).
- Discuss the qualifications, experiences, perspectives, and/or workshop ideas you would bring to the position(s) that would enrich the mission and services of the Center; please include any interest and/or expertise you have in facilitating workshops, managing projects, working collaboratively on projects, or (for GTF applicants) consulting with peers or students.

- Curriculum vitae
- List of all courses you have taught or served as a TA for at Vanderbilt or elsewhere , including your duties for each
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., sample syllabi, copies of teaching evaluations, sample assignments, etc.)
- Letter (or e-mail) of recommendation from a faculty member in your department
Strong candidates will be contacted in March to schedule an interview that will include a 5-7 minute teaching presentation by the applicant. Appointments will be announced by mid- to late April. We expect to hire four GTFs and ten Teaching Affiliates.
Current and former GTFs and Teaching Affiliates interested in applying for either position for 2009-2010 are asked to apply using alternate, streamlined procedures. Please contact Derek Bruff at the CFT for more information.
