Support Services

Tutoring Services

Tutoring Services will be closed for the summer
as of 5:00pm Thursday, May 1st, 2008.
We will re-open in September for the 2008 Fall semester.

Tutoring Services offers assistance to students who wish to enhance their academic performance in classes offered by the College of Arts and Sciences in the following departments:  (Click on a department to see a schedule of its Help Desk support)

Biological Sciences; Chemistry; Economics; Mathematics; Physics; Engineering; and Foreign Languages.

Services are free of charge.  Students are encouraged to work primarily with their professors and TAs to keep on top of their studies.  As a secondary resource, students can try the Help Desks offered by each department (by clicking on the links below).  These Help Desks are the fastest way to receive support outside of professorial and TA help.  The Help Desks typically run on a generous schedule.  As a further resource, students can request and schedule individual tutoring, but we encourage trying out the Help Desks first since these are often more than sufficient.

To request a tutor, see the Individual Tutoring Section below, with its link to our new Tutor Scheduling Calendar.

Description of Services

Help Desks, Drop-in Rooms, Open Labs, and/or Tutored Study Halls

We highly recommend these Help Desks, etc, since not only are they typically the fastest way to obtain support but they provide generous regular opportunities to work with an instructor or tutor on one's homework, assignments, and general abilities.  They are organized by and take place in the sponsoring department, and are staffed by graduate teaching assistants, advanced undergraduates, and sometimes by professors themselves. There is no charge for these sessions.  Click on the following for information on support for:

Individual Tutoring

Individual Tutoring is available on a limited basis to support students enrolled in classes offered by the departments listed above.  Tutors are advanced undergraduates or graduate students who have been identified and recommended by their departments and trained by Tutoring Services.  Individual tutoring takes place in the Central Library, 6th Floor North outside of room 612b on an appointment-basis. Although students are not charged for this service, each student is limited to seven sessions of tutoring per class per semester and to no more than 2 sessions in a class per week .  Please remember these limits over the semester and use your sessions wisely.  Please schedule far in advance since near test-times our office sees surges in requests among a limited number of (busy) tutors.  To schedule a tutoring session, click here.

Student-Centered Independent Study Groups can be organized through Tutoring Services upon the request of students seeking to study in conjunction with others enrolled in particular classes.  Tutoring Services will provide meeting space, and will disseminate information about potential study groups via this website.

Study Skills and Critical Thinking Workshops are offered early in each semester to assist students in acclimating to the academic and intellectual environment of the College of Arts and Science.

Support for Writing is offered by the Writing Studio, an independent academic unit of the College of Arts and Science.
