Matsushita International Foundation

Research Grant Program

DEADLINE: May 22, 2009
ELIGIBILITY: Subsidies are granted to students in doctoral courses and to researchers within five years of finishing their doctoral courses. There will be no distinctions made as to nationality or qualification. Those who received grants from the foundation in the past cannot apply.
ABSTRACT: The Matsushita International Foundation was established with the objective to contribute to the development of world culture and peace by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other countries and by developing personnel capable of promoting this understanding. In line with this goal, the foundation provides funds to research activities in the areas of humanities and social sciences that pertain to establishing international relationships based on global perspectives, solving various issues existing between Japan and other countries, or proposing various measures to promote mutual understanding. The foundation expects challenging themes that are creative and filled with pioneering ideas as well as international research, on issues of social, academic, and international needs in the broad area applicable to the above mentioned objective.

American Council on Germany

Goldman Fellowship for the Study of German and European Economic and International Affairs

DEADLINE: July 1, 2009 –ANTICIPATED DEADLINE
ELIGIBILITY: While applicants should demonstrate an interest in German and European affairs, no prior experience in Germany or Europe is required. The fellowship program aims to serve - but is not limited to - postgraduate students in relatively early stages of their careers (including individuals enrolled in Ph.D. programs who are finishing their dissertation).
CITIZENSHIP: U.S. citizens are eligible.
ABSTRACT: The fellowship supports promising American scholars and analysts whose research bears special significance for German economic and international policy within the wider European context. Since reunification in 1990, Germany has played an increasingly important role as an economic engine and political leader, both in Europe and in the global arena. American scholars and analysts continue to contribute to the understanding of key issues facing Germany and the wider Europe. The selection committee will evaluate applications based on the contribution the project will make to an understanding of key economic or foreign relations issues in Germany, Europe, and North America; the feasibility of the proposed project; the training of the applicant; and the scholarly potential of the applicant.

Hunt Fellowships for the Study of German Politics, Society, and Culture

DEADLINE: July 1, 2009 –ANTICIPATED DEADLINE
ELIGIBILITY: While applicants should demonstrate an interest in German political, social, and cultural affairs, no prior experience in Germany is required. The fellowship program aims to serve - but is not limited to - postgraduate students in relatively early stages of their careers (including individuals enrolled in Ph.D. programs who are finishing their dissertation). Knowledge of the German language is not a prerequisite.
CITIZENSHIP: U.S. citizens are eligible.
ABSTRACT: The fellowships were established in 2003 to support American academics whose research contributes to the scholarly discourse on contemporary German society and the political, cultural, and social history of Germany. Hunt fellows from the United States cross the Atlantic to undertake archival research, conduct interviews, and join their German counterparts in making significant contributions to the understanding of the German people. The selection committee will evaluate applications based on the contribution the project will make to a better understanding of contemporary Germany in historical context; the feasibility of the proposed project; the training of the applicant; and the scholarly potential of the applicant.

American Councils for International Education

Southeastern Europe Research Program

DEADLINE: October 1, 2009
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be graduate students or postdoctoral scholars who have language-proficiency levels sufficient to carry out advanced, independent in-country research. While a wide range of research topics receive support each year from the Title VIII program, all funded research must contribute to a body of knowledge enabling the USA to understand the region better and formulate more effective policies within it. All Title VIII applicants should address ways in which their research will contribute to a body of knowledge that enables U.S. policy makers to understand the region better, be it in anthropology, literature, history, international relations, political science, or some other field.
CITIZENSHIP: U.S. citizens are eligible.
ABSTRACT: Funded by the U.S. Department of State's Program for the Study of Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union, the American Councils’ Southeastern Europe Research Program provides support for independent research for at least three months in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia. Scholars may conduct research in more than one country during a single trip.
