Screening and Educational Health Fair for Latino Immigrants

College of Arts and Science Venture Fund Grant Dollars at Work

With the help of a Venture Fund grant, students in Spanish for Medicine along with Professor Lori Catanzaro, Senior Lecturer in Spanish, organized a basic screening and educational health fair for Latino Immigrants, held at the Clairmont Apartments in Nashville, Tennessee. This complex houses mostly immigrants from Mexico and Central America.

Venture Funds support innovative, venturesome approaches to undergraduate teaching in the College of Arts and Science.  Faculty members make proposals twice per academic year, which are reviewed by a committee of colleagues, and awarded on a competitive basis.

Spanish for Medicine is an advanced language course which integrates classroom instruction with service learning in Nashville's Latino community. This year, 28 pre-medical, pre-nursing and pre-dental students were involved in the health fair.
