Program in Career Development (PCD)
of the College of Arts and Science

The Program in Career Development is pleased to announce its new director, Vanessa Beasley. Professor Beasley is an accomplished Communications Studies scholar who works on presidential and political rhetoric. She just joined VU's faculty this year. She has an abiding interesting in junior faculty career development and lots of ideas for PCD's continuing growth. Please come meet Vanessa and raise a toast to her and to the end of the school year at Bosco's on May 1st!

PCD’s mission is to promote the professional development of Arts and Sciences Junior Faculty through an array of programming and mentoring opportunities, and to support them in establishing a flourishing career at Vanderbilt and beyond.


PCD Programming

PCD invites junior faculty to participate in an array of programming and activities, including:  talks by visiting speakers on professional advancement and career development; brown-bag lunches on a variety of subjects (see below for this year’s topics); research, writing and support groups with peers; one-on-one mentoring.

 

PCD Spring Events

January 17th
Discussion brownbag with Professor Lisa Pratt, Indiana U, on “Balancing Life and Work.” Pratt, a geologist who is currently Director of NASA’s Astrobiology Team: Life in the Deep Subsurface of Earth and Mars will meet with interested PCD participants to talk about her experiences blending an active personal, family and professional life and share her best tips for doing so successfully. January 22nd and 30th 3-4:30 (location TBA)
This workshop, co-sponsored by the Arts and Science Dean's Office and the Program in Career Development, will take a practical approach to the contents and organization of the tenure file. This year's event is newly designed to address the tenure process from the candidate's point of view, so please consider attending even if you have participated in prior workshops and informational sessions. In addition to the practical information we have to offer, three colleagues who have recently passed through the tenure process will join us to help to answer your questions. February 27th, 5-6:30 p.m. Gather at Bosco’s for a “TGISB” toast (Thank God it’s Spring Break!)

March 19th, 12-1:15 “Lab Life” with Bruce Appel (Biological Sciences) and Anna Roe (Psychology)
This brownbag will focus on both practical aspects and interpersonal dynamics of setting up and managing a lab. Location TBA: watch for updates

April 1st, 12-1:15 Special Brownbag Event Co-sponsored with the Center for Teaching
Come meet James Lange, columnist for The Chronicle of Higher Education, and author of Life on the Tenure Track (2005), and the forthcoming On Course: A Week-by-Week Guide to Your First Semester of College Teaching. Lang, now an Associate Professor at Assumption College, will lead a discussion and entertain questions on the subject of his books and recent Chronicle columns.

May 1st, 5-6:30 p.m. Gather at Bosco’s for an end of the semester celebration with your colleagues!
