Russell McIntire is Associate Dean for Special Academic Programs. His responsibilities include directing Study Abroad programs, the College Scholars Program, departmental Honors Programs, the College Honor Scholarship Program, Summer Sessions, and the Master of Liberal Arts and Science degree program; and assisting with undergraduate admissions and the administration of graduate tuition and stipend awards.
As a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy he teaches a freshman seminar on the ethics of life and death, a critical examination of issues from abortion to physician-assisted suicide. His interests in Philosophy are eclectic, but his most recent focus is applied medical ethics, especially the physician-patient relationship.
He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Vanderbilt in 1972 and returned to Vanderbilt in 1988 from Lambuth College where he was Professor of Philosophy and Associate Dean of the College. While there he designed a curriculum in medical ethics for family practice residents and served as Clinical Instructor of Medical Ethics in the Department of Family Medicine, University of Tennessee, Memphis - Health Science Center.
