Vanderbilt is committed to lowering the debt burden of its graduates. High levels of debt may keep our graduates from pursuing much-needed public service careers such as teaching, nursing, or social work, or it may prevent them from furthering their education. Vanderbilt is also committed to diversifying its student body. Diversity encourages learning both inside the classroom and out, and the enthusiasm and perspective that students from diverse backgrounds bring is a priceless asset to the liberal arts experience.
The College of Arts and Science hopes to lower student debt and increase diversity by raising support for need-based and honor scholarships. These scholarships will help Vanderbilt attract bright, hard-working students, regardless of their economic background.
The College of Arts and Science is working to strengthen its graduate programs. Chancellor Gee and Dean McCarty are determined to build a foundation from which the graduate programs in the College of Arts and Science can achieve national recognition. Strengthening graduate education is critical to strengthening Arts and Science as a whole since the top faculty members the College seeks to recruit want to work with the very best graduate students.
Excellent graduate programs enroll promising students and give them the financial support they need to conduct high-quality research. The College of Arts and Science is working to improve its systems of graduate recruitment through the development of, for example, a new online application and through increasingly targeted recruiting. At the same time, the College is working to raise funds for graduate fellowships that provide support for tuition, stipends, and research. This type of funding is essential to supporting ambitious students during the years of classwork, research, and writing that are necessary to become a specialist in a given field.
