International Study

Each year, more than 40 percent of College of Arts and Science juniors study abroad in Vanderbilt-sponsored programs in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of China on Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Spain, and beyond. Vanderbilt also cooperates with other universities to offer an even wider array of study abroad options.

One of the faculty's aims in developing the AXLE curriculum was to stimulate students' interest in other cultures and experiences. At the same time, AXLE requires students to continue to deepen their understanding of American history and culture. Thus, you will find that the academic requirements of AXLE are hospitable to study abroad, and that many of the courses in the curriculum encompass the pressing issues of globalization.

The College of Arts and Science believes that study abroad can be an essential component of a liberal arts education. Students who undertake it often find that it results in one of the most profound experiences of their college years, and contributes significantly to their overall intellectual development and social maturation. Many Vanderbilt faculty members regularly travel abroad to teach or do research in their areas of speciality. They are great sources for students seeking ideas or information about the possibilities for undertaking study abroad. In addition, students will find hundreds of international students and their families studying and working at Vanderbilt. Getting to know them and participating in some of the many on-campus events and activities geared towards Vanderbilt's international community will enhance your own experince, and, perhaps, focus your interests on particular countries where you might study abroad.
