Alum Conversations Recap - Private Equity Fall 2008
On Thursday, November 13th, 2008, seven Vanderbilt students RSVPed to meet up with alums Conner and Ginny Searcy '96. Mr. Searcy is currently a partner at Insight Equity, a private equity firm of the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Insight Equity uses a very hands-on approach to private equity, and because of this they typically look for candidates whose experience includes something like:
- 2 years working in banking (to develop finance skills)
- 2 years working within a business, gaining exposure to a key business function like plant managment, consulting, or marketing (to develop operations skills)
- At least one course in leadership or organizational behavior (to develop managment skills)
Speaking from his personal experience, Mr. Searcy stressed that one's career is a marathon, not a sprint. We can use each job we have to learn more about ourselves, our personality, our preferred workstyle and lifestyle.
