Eugene B. Shanks, Jr.

Eugene B. Shanks, Jr., a trustee since 1992, graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1969 with a B.A. in mathematics. He went on to earn his A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Stanford University in 1974.

In 1973, he joined Bankers Trust Company of New York and for the next five years held various positions in a number of areas. In 1978, he joined Commerce Union in Nashville as treasurer and head of all markets’ activities. Rejoining Bankers Trust in 1981, he became London-based head of European Sales and Trading. Returning to New York in late 1982, he assumed a series of roles as head of strategic planning, head of technology, and, in 1985, head of global markets. From 1992 until 1995, he served as president and director of Bankers Trust Company and its parent, Bankers Trust New York Corporation.
In 1997, Mr. Shanks founded NetRisk, a risk management software and advisory firm. He served as its President and CEO until its sale to Fitch Ratings in the fall of 2002.

Currently, Mr. Shanks serves as a financial services consultant and a board member of several corporations including the Trinsum Group, NewPower, Inc., and Natixis Capital Markets.

An elder of the Presbyterian Church, Mr. Shanks also serves on the board of directors of the Posse Foundation.
He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of Baylis, Virginia (’04), and Daniel.
