Joe L. Roby

Joe L. Roby, a trustee since April 2000, is a 1961 cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University. Immediately after graduation, he was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Fleet as a line officer until 1965. A lieutenant when he left the Navy, he attended Harvard Business School and earned an M.B.A. with distinction in 1967.

Mr. Roby was appointed Chairman of Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) on completion of the merger between CSFB and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, Inc., in November 2000. In 2002, he became Chairman Emeritus of CSFB. Previously, Mr. Roby served as president and chief executive officer of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ). He was named president in February 1996 and chief executive officer in February 1998. Before that, Mr. Roby served as DLJ’s chief operating officer, a position to which he was appointed in 1995.

Mr. Roby started his business career at Kidder Peabody in 1967 in the corporate finance department. He left Kidder in 1972 to join DLJ’s new investment banking department as a vice president and became managing director responsible for the entire investment banking department at DLJ in 1984. He was elected to the Board of Directors of DLJ in 1989.
Mr. Roby is a director of Maersk Line, Limited and Babcock & Brown Limited. He was previously a member of the Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the Central Park Conservancy and is trustee emeritus of the Allen-Stevenson School in New York City.

Previously, he was a trustee of Carnegie Hall. Mr. Roby was also formerly a director of the New York Stock Exchange, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Apogent Technologies, Inc., Musicland Group Inc., and Thermadyne Holdings Corp. Mr. Roby is a member of the Lyford Cay Club, the National Golf Links of America, The Links Club, the Stanwich Club, the Meadow Club of Southampton, the Bathing Corporation of Southampton, and the Southampton Bath & Tennis Club.

He is the father of Curtis and is married to Hilppa.
