We continue our service to the community for another season, providing superb musicianship by our performing faculty and students, interspersed with an ever-growing array of internationally hailed guest performers, lecturers and master artist teachers.

An engaging evening of music featuring the flute in four beautiful chamber settings. Works include the Trio Sonata in C Minor by Johann Joachim Quantz; the Quartet in D Major by Mozart; Epitaphe de Jean Harlow by Frenchman Charles Koechlin; and the gorgeous "Naiades" Fantasy-Sonata by British composer William Alwyn. The Dust Poets
Irreverent Canadian Folk-Pop
The Dust Poets are a five-piece acoustic folk-pop group with roots deep in the Canadian prairie. This musically restless group creates arrangements that wander easily among different styles - from folk to bluegrass, through swing, pop and circus freak ragtime. Featuring an all-acoustic line-up, the band includes guitar, upright bass, accordion, mandolin, clarinet, unusual percussion, and extraordinary four part vocal harmonies.

Blair String Quartet and Blakemore Trio cellist Felix Wang is joined by his colleague Amy Jarman, soprano and student cellists of Vanderbilt University to perform solo and collaborative works. The program includes Bach's Suite No. 2 in D Minor for inaccompanied cello and two works by Villa-Lobos, Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1 for eight cellos, and No. 5 for soprano and eight cellos. Blair musicologist Helena Simonett leads the discussion.

The Quartet performs the last of Beethoven's early quartets, Quartet in B-flat Major, Op.18, No.6 as well as Mendelssohn's lyrical "Tempo Con Variazioni" and "Scherzo" from Op. 81. Also featured are Two Pieces for String Quartet, "Elegy" and "Polka" by Shostakovitch. The program closes with Tchaikovsky's Quartet in D Major, Op.11, a rousing end for an extraordinary concert.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD: Variations on the 23rd Psalm
Every church or synagogue has its unique way of singing this particular psalm. Michael Alec Rose provides a commentary on the powerful relationships between the biblical text and its diverse musical settings, along with several examples of how the 23rd Psalm has inspired composers from the classical tradition, while musicians and choral groups of several congregations across Nashville perform versions of the piece. In this concert, intended for music lovers of all sorts (and one of the events in Vanderbilt University's spring 2008 conference, "God in Music City") the cup of beautiful song will truly run over.
