The "Rebirth" of the Center

In 2004 the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center completed a 2.5 million dollar renovation and was officially reopened during a grand rededication ceremony. This celebration also marked the appointment of the center’s current director, Dr. Frank Dobson Jr. Under his leadership team the Center has expanded its programs and outreach efforts, establishing it as a place on campus where students from all backgrounds can enjoy the richness and diversity of Black culture.

Through its presentation of collaborative programs, the Center represents an important part of Vanderbilt's effort to foster understanding and appreciation of the Black experience. The programs of the Center are open to the Vanderbilt and Nashville communities, while the building is accessible to all for small meetings and other gatherings.

The BJJBCC is a member of the Association of Black Culture Centers from which it received a commendation for facilitating the retention and graduation of Black students. It has also been recognized for promoting knowledge and education about the African world experience.
