Activities/Programs
Living History Luncheon Series
Many of our most courageous and historical African American icons come from the Nashville community. Several times each semester the BCC sponsors a series of lunchtime speakers to tell their stories of courage and perseverance.
Black Films and Documentary Series
The BCC keeps the historical visual legacy of great Black films and documentaries alive by sponsoring screenings of films which address the Black experience. Additionally, discussions of these works (even hosting the filmmakers) are part of this film series.
Fall/Spring Art Exhibits
Approximately 4-6 times each academic year the BCC sponsors exhibits from artists of color both of national and international notoriety. The exhibit is usually displayed in our gallery, throughout the center and is available for viewing throughout the day for up to six weeks.
Pre-College Programs
The BCC supports programs that enrich and support the future of our young people. Through partnerships with organizations like the YMCA, local junior high and high school students receive free tutoring, mentoring and training in important life skills from Vanderbilt University students, faculty and staff. The center also provides special tours of our facilities to community groups and pre-college age students.
MLK Holiday Celebration
The beginning of each year marks the start of many programs to commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The BCC sponsors and co-sponsors numerous events leading into Black History Month to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King.
Black History Month
Though the center views Black history as a year-long celebration, the month of February is marked as a national period to celebrate the legacy of African Americans. During this month the BCC provides numerous programs including distinguished speakers, cultural performances, art exhibits, film series and other tributes.
Women’s History Month
Recognizing Black women who play such vital roles in our evolution but are often overlooked in history the BCC works with organizations like the Margaret Cunniggim Women’s Center to sponsor programs to highlight great women of color locally and beyond who have paved the way for future generations.
Homecoming
The fall semester and homecoming is an exciting time for current students and alumni from near and far. During homecoming week leading up to the weekend celebration the BCC links with other campus organizations like the BSA, NPHC and AVBA to sponsor a variety of exciting activities for the Vanderbilt family.
First Fridays
Each month the BCC, along with the BSA, AVBA and others, sponsors a food and fun get together in the center. This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to fellowship, get to know each other or simply “catch up.”
Black Greek Week
The Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities come together to promote the principles for which each organization is founded. These organizations collaborate on chapter displays, Greek panel discussions, community service projects and other related activities with the support of the BCC.
The Role of the Black Church: A Discussion Series
A new series which focuses on the role of the Black church as the “provisional government of the African American community” is studied and debated by local authorities, religious leaders and other scholars.
Distinguished Lecture Series
The lecture series focuses on internationally known speakers and presenters. Past lecturers include Angela Davis, Negro Leagues legend Buck O’Neil, author Kevin Powell and members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen.
