The results are in! This October, the Nashville Scene released their 2012 Readers’ Poll, recognizing two key Vanderbilt Arts programs. The Sarratt Youth Art Institute was voted #1 “Best Camp for Kids”, and the Vanderbilt Dance Program was named in the category of “Best Dance School”. Vanderbilt University was also awarded “Best Place for Continuing Education”.

Best Camp for Kids: The Sarratt Youth Art Institute, now in its 7th year, engages children, ages 8 – 16, in thematic art-making, and is led by Artist David Heustess, Assistant Director of Visual Arts. This year, students took classes in jewelry, papier-mâché, sculpture, Japanese printmaking, mosaics, paper making/book arts, and clay animation, focusing on the theme of “Art and Nature”. The Sarratt Art Studio, where the Youth Institute is conducted, was also recently featured on an episode of “Tennessee Crossroads” as a place where members of the community can take affordable classes from professional artists.

Best Dance School: The Vanderbilt Dance Program promotes dance education for the Vanderbilt and Nashville communities, offering 45-55 classes each week, from Ballet and Ballroom to Hip-Hop, Irish, and Bharatanatyam (classical dance of India). Registration is available to all Vanderbilt students, faculty, and staff, as well as Nashville community dancers, ages 14 and older. The Vanderbilt Dance Program is coordinated by Assistant Director, Kelvin Amburgey.

Best Continuing Education: Community members line up early and often to enroll in the coveted spots available in The Vanderbilt Dance Program and The Sarratt Art Studio. These programs offer arts education and cultural enrichment to hundreds of Nashvillians each week.

Congratulations to these creative campus educators and leaders!

The Office of the Arts and Creative Engagement (ACE) would like to thank the Nashville Scene and its readers for recognizing the Arts at Vanderbilt with this distinguished honor.
