Welcome to the Department of Art

The studio faculty at Vanderbilt is a diverse and professionally active group of artists who are also outstanding teachers. Our courses are offered in a variety of media, which provide wide-ranging methods and perspectives within a rich liberal arts environment. With small classes, we are able to work closely with each student and assist in the development of ideas and honing of technical skills. The department offers a solid grounding in traditional practices but also encourages more innovative approaches with concepts and media.

The E. Bronson Ingram Studio Arts Center, located in the heart of campus, was completed in August of 2005. The facility offers light-filled rooms for our classes, individual studios for our senior majors, a well-equipped lecture hall, galleries that can be expanded from one space to four to accommodate exhibitions and critiques and a spacious lounge. The campus and the city of Nashville have much to offer our students with a lively and diverse creative community in both the arts and music.

Many students will use the program as a foundation for careers in which creativity and the visual arts are especially valued as the basis for advanced training in professional schools (such as art or architecture) and for employment in galleries, museums, or design-related fields. An important goal of the department is to help the student find his or her voice in their medium, to become readers of the rich visual environment of our culture, and to encourage creative approaches to learning.
