Army ROTC involves one Military Science course and a weekly leadership lab each semester. Freshmen and sophomores take introductory basic courses, without obligation, to learn about Army ROTC and officer opportunities. Eligible juniors take advanced courses after they enter into a contract with the Army. Courses include: Freshmen: Military Science and Leadership 111: Foundations of Officership Introduces students to issues and competencies that are central to a commissioned officer’s responsibilities. Establish framework for understanding officership, leadership, and Army values followed and “life skills” such as physical fitness and time management. (1 credit hour)Military Science and Leadership 113: Basic Leadership Establishes foundation of basic leadership fundamentals such as problem solving, communications, briefings and effective writing, goal setting, techniques for improving listening and speaking skills and an introduction to counseling.(2 credit hours)Sophomores: Military Science and Leadership 151: Individual Leadership StudiesStudents identify successful leadership characteristics through observation of others and self through experiential learning exercises. Students record observed traits (good and bad) in a dimensional leadership journal and discuss observations in small group settings. (3 credit hours)Military Science and Leadership 152: Leadership & TeamworkStudy examines how to build successful teams, various methods for influencing action, effective communication in setting and achieving goals, the importance of timing the decision, creativity in the problem solving process, and obtaining team buy-in through immediate feedback. (2 credit hours)Juniors: Military Science and Leadership 211: Leadership & Problem Solving Students conduct self-assessment of leadership style, develop personal fitness regimen, and learn to plan and conduct individual/small unit tactical training while testing reasoning and problem-solving techniques. Students receive direct feedback on leadership abilities. (3 credit hours)Military Science and Leadership 212: Leadership & EthicsExamines the role communications, values, and ethics play in effective leadership. Topics include ethical decision-making, consideration of others, spirituality in the military, and survey Army leadership doctrine. Emphasis on improving oral and written communication abilities. (3 credit hours)Seniors: Military Science and Leadership 252: Leadership and Management (Senior Seminar - Transition to 2nd Lieutenant) Final preparation for service in the United States Army as a Commissioned Officer. Students must complete a semester long Senior Leadership Project that requires them to plan, organize, collaborate, analyze, and demonstrate their leadership skills. LABS & OTHER LEADERSHIP TRAINING All cadets participate in leadership labs, which involve military skills training, physical training and adventure activities such as rappelling, orienteering and marksmanship. The labs meet every Thursday. Seniors plan the labs, with juniors leading and executing the labs. Cadets seeking greater challenges can look no further than the Battalion's Ranger Challenge Team or summer leadership and adventure training opportunities. |
