The Anthropology Department is pleased to announce a remarkable opportunity for its undergraduate students, the Emily Ann Bennett Plant Award. Emily majored in anthropology at Vanderbilt and is now a graduate student in our department. She and her family decided to establish a scholarship program to aid students who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree in anthropology. The award consists of a cash stipend, up to a maximum of $3000, to help defray the educational costs of Vanderbilt students majoring in anthropology. The award, which is both need and merit based, is available in two categories. For students who have educational loans, or who must work in order to attend Vanderbilt, the Plant Award may be used to reduce the costs of tuition or living expenses. For other students, the Plant Award may be used to fund supplemental educational activities that will enrich their study of anthropology at Vanderbilt in ways that they and their families could not otherwise afford. Examples of such activities might be summer research or participation in a field school.
Students who are majoring in anthropology or who intend to major in anthropology will be eligible to apply for the next competition, which will be announced in the spring of 2008. The application form and instructions are attached; additional copies will be available in the Anthropology department office (Garland 124). Completed applications should be returned to the department office (Garland 124) by the announced deadline, normally in early April. Finalists will be invited to participate in an interview.
