Working Paper Series

Vanderbilt scholars are active researchers in the field of American Studies. To help foster this research, the American Studies Program conducts a lively work-in-progress series where members present current ideas to faculty and graduate students. Working papers are read in advance and two formal responses (one from inside the discipline and the other from outside) are offered to begin discussion.

For the first meeting of the semester on January 24, Christopher Freeburg (English, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) discussed his paper “Melville’s Americas and the Iconography of the End."

On April 8, the seminar will co-sponsor a public lecture by George Sanders, graduate student in the Department of Sociology and American Studies Fellow of the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities.

If you have a paper you would like the group to consider, are interested in being one of our reviewers, or have any questions, please contact American Studies director Teresa Goddu: teresa.a.goddu@vanderbilt.edu.
