Gene Shanks

Gene Shanks lives in Greenwich, Conn., with Susan, his wife of 31 years. They have three children, Bayle, Dan and Virginia (BA’04). After graduating from Vanderbilt in 1969, Gene earned his doctorate in economics from Stanford. He then joined Bankers Trust on Wall Street. Except for a two-year hiatus in the late 1970s when he served as treasurer of Commerce Union Bank in Nashville, Gene stayed at Bankers Trust for 20 years. He became president in the early 1990s. Since then, he has started and sold a risk management software company, restructured a consulting firm and generally had a fun time. Currently he is a member of the Board of Trust of Vanderbilt, a founding director of The Posse Foundation and a new member of the reconstituted board of Freddie Mac.
