Reality television shows have become immensely popular in the last decade for a variety of reasons – both economic and cultural – but their social value is rarely debated. Most pundits see them as socially and morally problematic, while the degree to which they are scripted remains in question. By reviewing and critiquing a number of examples, we will discuss a wide range of issues raised by reality television, highlighting both positive and negative values.
